Last year, gambling revenue in Latvia was 128 million euros. Online games nearly doubled year-on-year from 2020, accounting for €109.0 million of total revenue, an increase of 91.8%.

Online casino games accounted for €87.8 million of igaming’s total revenue, more than double its revenue from 2020. Signe Birne, Head of the Lotteries and Gambling Inspectorate, commented on how the Covid-19 crisis has reshaped the gaming market.

“Last year, the amount of revenue decreased significantly and the share of game types in total industry revenue changed, due to restrictions imposed by Covid-19,” Birne said.

“Slots revenue was €17.2 million in 2021, which is only 18% of its 2020 revenue. Interactive gambling revenue is of 109.0 million euros, almost double the results of 2020.”

Throughout 2021, the Inspectorate implemented controls to protect the online gaming market as more customers gambled, enforcing anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist financing measures .

The Inspectorate also blocked a number of illegal customer sites in Latvia. A total of 735 domains were blocked in 2021, a 34% increase from 2020.

For land-based games, slot machines accounted for €17.1m of overall revenue, down 82.0% compared to 2020. Table games, such as roulette and card games , generated €1.5 million, a decrease of 70.5%.

Bingo halls suffered a loss of €2,000 compared to €121,000 generated the previous year. Revenue from betting terminals amounted to €245,000, down 84.3%.

In terms of GGR, Latvia’s third quarter was the most successful, generating €42.2 million. The fourth quarter brought in 40.7 million euros, while the second quarter accumulated 29.4 million euros. The first quarter of the year was the least successful, with a GGR of €26.4m.
