Moscow threatens to block Russian Wikipedia over invasion article
(Reuters) – Russian authorities have threatened to block the Russian-language Wikipedia site over an article reporting deaths among Ukrainian civilians as well as Russian forces entering Ukraine, Russian Wikipedia said on Tuesday.
In a tweet, he posted a photo of a notification from Russian communications regulator Roskomnadzor informing him of a threat from state prosecutors to block the site because of an article in Russian titled “Russian Invasion of Ukraine (2022)”.
Among the “information disseminated illegally”, the offending notice included “reports of numerous casualties among the military of the Russian Federation as well as among the Ukrainian civilian population, including children”.
The UN human rights office said on Tuesday that at least 136 civilians, including 13 children, had been killed since Russia invaded Ukraine last week.
Russia has not released specific casualty figures for its own army, but says its casualties were far lower than those of Ukrainian forces.
Moscow uses the term “special military operation” for its campaign, saying it wants to disarm Ukraine and eliminate the threat it poses to Russia’s security.
Russian authorities could not immediately be asked for comment.
