Russian Language and Literature Festival | News Thiruvananthapuram


Thiruvananthapuram: The Russian House hosted the 12th annual festival of Russian language and literature on Thursday. The Sergey Esenin Prize was awarded to novelist, poet and translator Venu V Desam, as part of the festival. The prize is jointly established by the Russian House and the Esenin State Museum in Moscow.
The Consul General of the Russian Federation in South India, Oleg N Avdeev, who opened the event, said Sergey Alexandrovich Esenin is a true national poet of Russia. Esenin loved Russia and wrote about the innocence of village life. His poems also reflected the pride he had in his country and wrote poems for the Russian people.
University of Kerala Vice Chancellor Vice President Mahadevan Pillai, who delivered the opening speech, said University of Kerala has taken the initiative to establish cooperation with major Russian universities and hoped it would promote Russian language and literature among the new generation. Venu V Desam was selected for the Sergey Esenin Prize for his contribution to the popularization of Russian literature in India through translations. He has translated major novels and short stories by Mikhail Dostoyevsky. In addition, he translated Leo Tolstoy and Anton Chekhov.
Oksana Alekseeva, co-writer of docufiction -ROOM-8 ESENIN’S KEY – was also congratulated. The film was screened before the meeting. The Honorary Consul of the Russian Federation and Director of the Russian House Ratheesh C Nair, chaired the meeting.
